What does it mean to believe there is no god except God?

Satan's ultimate mission is to stop humans from Gods straight path [to paradise].

"[Beliel (Iblis) said:] I will lie in wait for them on Your straight path: Then will I assault them from before them and behind them, from their right and their left" (Quran 7:17)

But all who truly believe "LA ILAHA ILLALLAH" (lit: [theres] no god except God) will enter paradise. "
The Prophet Muhammad (s.a.a.s) said: "Whoever says: there is no god but God enters Paradise." (Tabarani narrated it from Abu Dharr in the Kabir (7:55), Ibn Hibban in his Sahih (31), al-Hakim in his Mustadrak (4:251), al-Mundhiri in al-Targhib (2:422), al-Haythami in Majma` al-zawa'id (1:18), Ibn `Adi (7:2639), Abu Nu`aym in the Hilya (7:174), and al-Bazzar from `Umar.)

Satan has witnessed our creation and been alive to study us till this day. He has perfected the art of tricking humans.  Knowing his tactics will only get you so far.  But do not despair. his ultimate goal is to stop us believing "la ilaha ill allaah".  Therefore the best way to defeat him is to stop him achieving this goal - to ensure you truly believe "la ilaha ill allaah"
"As for My servants, no authority shall you [beliel (iblis)] have over them"(Quran 17: 65)

so what does "la ilaha ill allah" (lit: [theres] no god except God) truly mean?

God worship starts with the worshipper
worshipper -> God.

Just as idol worship starts with the worshipper
worshipper -> idol.

Many people make the mistake of attacking the object of worship (i.e. the idol) like young Abraham (a.s.) when he smashed the idols. But did it break the people's idol worship? Or did it make them more protective over their idols?

Anyway, not all idols can be seen or broken . Literally anything can become an idol if it is worshipped more than God.  (People, prophets, husbands, wives, women, children, wealth, money, clothes, shisha, football, music, your status, your image, your body, your intellect, your knowledge, your success, your achievements, your religion, your desires, etc).
" Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? " (Quran 25:43)
But again, it is not these objects of worship that are "evil" - but only the act of worshipping them is.

So how do you know if you just really like something, or even love something for the sake of God, or you love it to the point of worship IT?  Take a simple test: ask yourself how you'd feel if that object were taken away or destroyed?  (Would u react angrily like they did to Abraham a.s.? Or would it not bother you that much and you'd accept it? )

This is how God tests some of us.  But He also tests us to perfect us.  To destroy our love for these "idols of the heart" and perfect our belief in His oneness (laa ilaaha illallah).

Do not think we are immune to such subtle shirk -it can happen to the best of us.
When the prophet Muhammad (s.a.a.s.) died and Omar (r.a.) was upset, he couldn't accept that he had died.  Abu bakr (r.a.) had accepted it, however.

"Abu Bakr arrived and said, "Sit down, O 'Umar!" But 'Umar refused to sit down. So the people came to Abu Bakr and left Umar. Abu Bakr said, "To proceed, if anyone amongst you used to worship Muhammad, then Muhammad has passed away, but if (anyone of) you used to worship God, then God is Alive and shall never die.
God said, "And Muhammad is but a messenger; the messengers have come before him; if then he dies or is killed will you turn back upon your heels? And whoever turns back upon his heels, he will by no means do harm to God in the least and God will reward the grateful." (3.144)"
